History & origin

A village rooted in the heart of Maharashtra

Wai derives its name from the Sanskrit Word "Wadi" (Madhuca longifolia), which once grew abundantly across this region of the Deccan plateau. The tree held deep cultural and economic significance for early settlers — its flowers were used to brew traditional liquor, its seeds pressed for oil, and its timber used in construction.

The village has been inhabited for several centuries, with early records from the British-era land surveys of the 1800s documenting its fertile black soil and prosperous farming community. Post-independence, Wai was integrated into Maharashtra in 1956 when states were reorganised on linguistic lines.
